Wallpaper rolls and pattern repeat

Estimate strips and rolls for walls of the same height. Include trimming and an optional straight-match vertical repeat.

Editable example

An example is filled in. Replace it with your own data to calculate.

Use meters for wall and wallpaper dimensions. Check the product for pattern repeat length.

Enter combined width of equal-height walls (m), for example 4. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter wall height (m), for example 2.5. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter roll width (m), for example 0.53. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter roll length (m), for example 10. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter 0 if matching is unnecessary. For a 53 cm repeat enter 0.53.
For 5 cm at each end, 10 cm in total, enter 0.1.

Example result

Whole rolls needed

3rolls

Calculates cut length per strip before strips per roll. Short leftovers cannot necessarily be joined into a complete strip.

Strips to cut8 strips
Cut length per strip2.65 m
Strips from each roll3 strips

Strips = ceil(wall width ÷ roll width). Add trimming allowance to the cut length, then round up to a whole pattern repeat. Strips per roll = floor(roll length ÷ cut length). Doors and windows are not deducted. Supports vertical straight matching only; offset or half-drop patterns, differing wall heights and joining across rolls need separate layout planning.

Method and scope

Required strips round wall width divided by roll width upward. Cut length is wall height plus trim rounded up to a whole pattern repeat; strips per roll round roll length divided by cut length downward.

A 53 cm repeat should be entered as 0.53 m. Top and bottom allowances are added together, so 5 cm at each end means 0.1 m total.

Doors and windows are not deducted. Half-drop, offset matching, unequal wall heights and matching across rolls require a separate layout; a roll must yield at least one complete strip.

What this helps you do

Estimate strips and rolls for walls of the same height. Include trimming and an optional straight-match vertical repeat.

What to enter

Start with combined width of equal-height walls (m), then fill the other relevant fields in the units shown. The field hints explain the required format and examples.

How the calculation works

Required strips round wall width divided by roll width upward. Cut length is wall height plus trim rounded up to a whole pattern repeat; strips per roll round roll length divided by cut length downward.

Worked example

For a 3 m wide, 2.4 m high wall with 0.5 m wide by 10 m rolls and 0.1 m total trim, each strip is 2.5 m without a repeat. Six strips need two rolls containing four strips each.

Understanding the answer

A 53 cm repeat should be entered as 0.53 m. Top and bottom allowances are added together, so 5 cm at each end means 0.1 m total.

Scope and limitations

Doors and windows are not deducted. Half-drop, offset matching, unequal wall heights and matching across rolls require a separate layout; a roll must yield at least one complete strip.
