Screen pixel density and size

Estimate a rectangular screen's pixel density and visible width and height. Use the physical visible diagonal and the product's native resolution.

Start with your own numbers

Editable example

An example is filled in. Replace it with your own data to calculate.

Use product specifications: enter 27 for a 27-inch screen, and enter 2560 and 1440 separately for 2560 × 1440 resolution.

Enter visible diagonal inches, for example 27. Do not include the frame or stand or enter screen width.
Enter native horizontal pixels from the specification, for example 2560. Do not use browser CSS width or a scaled desktop size.
Enter native vertical pixels from the specification, for example 1440. This is not centimetres.

Example result

Pixels per inch

108.79PPI

PPI means pixels per physical inch. Width and height cover the visible screen only, excluding frame and stand. PPI alone does not determine overall image quality.

Visible screen width59.77 cm
Visible screen height33.62 cm
Pixel pitch0.233487 mm

Assumes a rectangular visible screen and square pixels. Pixel diagonal = √(horizontal pixels² + vertical pixels²). PPI = pixel diagonal ÷ physical diagonal in inches. Visible width/height = diagonal inches × 2.54 × corresponding pixel count ÷ pixel diagonal, in cm. Pixel pitch = 25.4 ÷ PPI, in mm. The inch measurement is the visible diagonal, excluding the frame and stand; it is not screen width. Use native product resolution, not browser CSS width, screenshot size or the scaled operating-system workspace. Curved arc length, rounded corners, cutouts and non-square pixels are excluded; advertised sizes may be rounded. PPI describes density only and does not guarantee color accuracy, brightness, HDR, refresh rate, eye comfort or viewing distance.

Method and scope

Pixel diagonal is the square root of horizontal pixels squared plus vertical pixels squared. PPI divides pixel diagonal by physical diagonal inches; visible dimensions use the pixel aspect ratio, and pixel pitch is 25.4 divided by PPI in millimetres.

PPI means pixels per physical inch. The diagonal is not screen width, and the dimensions exclude bezels and the stand.

The model assumes square pixels and a flat rectangular visible area, without curved arc length, rounded corners or cut-outs. Browser CSS size, screenshots and scaled desktop areas are not native resolution; PPI alone does not determine image quality or viewing safety.

What this helps you do

Estimate a rectangular screen's pixel density and visible width and height. Use the physical visible diagonal and the product's native resolution.

What to enter

Start with visible screen diagonal (inches), then fill the other relevant fields in the units shown. The field hints explain the required format and examples.

How the calculation works

Pixel diagonal is the square root of horizontal pixels squared plus vertical pixels squared. PPI divides pixel diagonal by physical diagonal inches; visible dimensions use the pixel aspect ratio, and pixel pitch is 25.4 divided by PPI in millimetres.

Worked example

A 24-inch 1920 by 1080 screen has about 91.79 PPI. Its visible width is about 53.13 cm and height about 29.89 cm.

Understanding the answer

PPI means pixels per physical inch. The diagonal is not screen width, and the dimensions exclude bezels and the stand.

Scope and limitations

The model assumes square pixels and a flat rectangular visible area, without curved arc length, rounded corners or cut-outs. Browser CSS size, screenshots and scaled desktop areas are not native resolution; PPI alone does not determine image quality or viewing safety.
