Floor area and wall area differ. Buying paint also requires product coverage and number of coats.

Assumes a rectangular room. Divide irregular shapes into sections; material waste is excluded.

Method and scope

Floor area equals length times width. Wall area equals twice (length plus width) times height, minus the entered openings.

The wall result excludes only the door and window area you enter. Check the measured surfaces rather than using property floor-area records blindly.

Ceilings, cutting waste and construction prices are excluded. Divide an irregular space into suitable rectangles and add compatible areas yourself.

What this helps you do

Estimate rectangular floor area and the surrounding wall area. Measure all lengths in metres.

What to enter

Start with room length (m), then fill the other relevant fields in the units shown. The field hints explain the required format and examples.

How the calculation works

Floor area equals length times width. Wall area equals twice (length plus width) times height, minus the entered openings.

Worked example

A 4 m by 3 m room has 12 square metres of floor. At 2.5 m high with 3 square metres of openings, wall area is 32 square metres.

Understanding the answer

The wall result excludes only the door and window area you enter. Check the measured surfaces rather than using property floor-area records blindly.

Scope and limitations

Ceilings, cutting waste and construction prices are excluded. Divide an irregular space into suitable rectangles and add compatible areas yourself.
