Return on dated cash flows

Estimate an annualized return when investment and recovery dates are irregular. Enter money invested as negative and money received as positive.

Start with your own numbers

Editable example

An example is filled in. Replace it with your own data to calculate.

Enter each date and amount separately. Contributions are negative; receipts are positive.

Each contribution or receipt

Enter one cash flow per date and amount. For example, contributing TWD 1,000 is -1000; receiving TWD 1,100 is 1100.

Include an unsold holding's valuation once, on the final date. Both cash-flow dates and amounts affect the result.

Worked steps

  1. Sort by date and merge entries on the same day; contributions are negative and receipts positive.
  2. Solve Σ CFᵢ ÷ (1+r)^((dateᵢ−start date)/365) = 0.
  3. The annualized result is about 10%; this is not a forecast of future returns.

Supports years 2000–2100, 2–100 cash flows and an absolute amount up to 1 billion per entry. Merges entries by date first. Only one sign change, from contributions to receipts, is supported. Multiple sign changes, such as reinvesting after dividends, may have multiple roots and are refused. For an unsold holding, include its valuation once as the final positive cash flow on the valuation date. Uses 365 days per year; not an investment forecast.

Method and scope

The tool combines entries on the same date and solves for the rate making discounted dated flows sum to zero. Year fractions use 365 days, and only one sign transition from investment to recovery is supported.

If an investment is unsold, include its valuation once as the final positive flow on the valuation date. That valuation is an assumption, not cash already received.

Use 2-100 entries dated 2000-2100, with each absolute amount no more than one billion. Reinvesting after distributions can create multiple sign changes and multiple roots, so this version rejects such cases; it does not forecast future returns.

What this helps you do

Estimate an annualized return when investment and recovery dates are irregular. Enter money invested as negative and money received as positive.

What to enter

Start with dated cash flows: yyyy-mm-dd,amount, then fill the other relevant fields in the units shown. The field hints explain the required format and examples.

How the calculation works

The tool combines entries on the same date and solves for the rate making discounted dated flows sum to zero. Year fractions use 365 days, and only one sign transition from investment to recovery is supported.

Worked example

Enter 2025-01-01,-1000 and 2026-01-01,1100 for a TWD 1,000 investment recovered as TWD 1,100 after 365 days. The annualized return is 10%.

Understanding the answer

If an investment is unsold, include its valuation once as the final positive flow on the valuation date. That valuation is an assumption, not cash already received.

Scope and limitations

Use 2-100 entries dated 2000-2100, with each absolute amount no more than one billion. Reinvesting after distributions can create multiple sign changes and multiple roots, so this version rejects such cases; it does not forecast future returns.
