Adult resting energy estimate

Estimate resting energy expenditure using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Select the coefficient group used by the original research rather than interpreting it as a health judgement.

Editable example

An example is filled in. Replace it with your own data to calculate.

Adults enter height, weight and age, then choose the coefficient group from the original research.

The original study grouped coefficients by biological sex. This selects a formula coefficient, not a health diagnosis.
Enter weight (kg), for example 60. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter height (cm), for example 165. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter age (years), for example 30. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.

Example result

Estimated resting energy expenditure

1,320.25kcal/day

Estimates energy used at rest. It is not directly your daily food allowance or a weight-loss prescription.

REE in kcal/day = 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + sex coefficient. The original study covered 498 healthy adults aged 19–78. Resting expenditure is not total daily energy need and should not directly become a weight-loss calorie target or diet prescription. Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, major illness, unusual body composition and medication need professional assessment.

Method and scope

REE in kcal per day equals 10 times kilograms plus 6.25 times centimetres minus five times years, plus the selected coefficient. The coefficients are -161 for the female research group and +5 for the male group.

Daily activity adds energy needs beyond resting expenditure. The result should not automatically become a calorie target or weight-loss prescription.

The original study involved 498 healthy adults aged 19-78. Children, pregnancy or breastfeeding, major illness, unusual body composition and medication-related situations require professional assessment.

What this helps you do

Estimate resting energy expenditure using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Select the coefficient group used by the original research rather than interpreting it as a health judgement.

What to enter

Start with research coefficient group, then fill the other relevant fields in the units shown. The field hints explain the required format and examples.

How the calculation works

REE in kcal per day equals 10 times kilograms plus 6.25 times centimetres minus five times years, plus the selected coefficient. The coefficients are -161 for the female research group and +5 for the male group.

Worked example

For 60 kg, 165 cm and age 30 using the -161 coefficient, REE is 1,320.25 kcal per day. This is energy at rest, not total daily expenditure.

Understanding the answer

Daily activity adds energy needs beyond resting expenditure. The result should not automatically become a calorie target or weight-loss prescription.

Scope and limitations

The original study involved 498 healthy adults aged 19-78. Children, pregnancy or breastfeeding, major illness, unusual body composition and medication-related situations require professional assessment.
