MAKE THE FORMULA CLEAR

Powers and roots

Raise a number to a power or find its nth root. Select the operation before entering the exponent or root degree.

Start with your own numbers

Editable example

An example is filled in. Replace it with your own data to calculate.

Choose power or root, then enter the value and exponent or root degree; for example, square root of 9.

Choose operation. Check the selected option before entering the remaining values.
Enter value x, for example 9. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter exponent or root degree n, for example 2. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.

Example result

Power result

81

The square root of 9 is 3. Powers and roots work in opposite directions; an even root cannot take a negative value here.

Worked steps

  1. 9 ^ 2=81

Uses real numbers. Negative numbers can have odd roots but not even roots. Root degree must be a positive integer. This tool does not define 0 to the power 0.

Method and scope

Power mode calculates x raised to n. Root mode seeks a real number whose nth power equals x, with a positive integer root degree.

An even root returns the nonnegative principal real root. Powers and roots work in opposite directions but have different permitted input ranges.

This tool stays within real numbers and does not define zero to the zero power. Negative values have real odd integer roots, while negative even roots and nonpositive or fractional root degrees are rejected.

What this helps you do

Raise a number to a power or find its nth root. Select the operation before entering the exponent or root degree.

What to enter

Start with operation, then fill the other relevant fields in the units shown. The field hints explain the required format and examples.

How the calculation works

Power mode calculates x raised to n. Root mode seeks a real number whose nth power equals x, with a positive integer root degree.

Worked example

The cube of 4 is 64, while the cube root of 64 is 4. The cube root of -8 is -2, but the square root of -8 is not real.

Understanding the answer

An even root returns the nonnegative principal real root. Powers and roots work in opposite directions but have different permitted input ranges.

Scope and limitations

This tool stays within real numbers and does not define zero to the zero power. Negative values have real odd integer roots, while negative even roots and nonpositive or fractional root degrees are rejected.
