Editable example

An example is filled in. Replace it with your own data to calculate.

Choose the calculation, then enter numerators and denominators separately. Denominators cannot be 0.

Choose calculation. Check the selected option before entering the remaining values.
Enter first numerator, for example 1. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter first denominator, for example 2. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Choose operation. Check the selected option before entering the remaining values.
Enter second numerator, for example 1. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.
Enter second denominator, for example 3. Use the displayed unit; replace the example with your own value.

Example result

Fraction in lowest terms

5/6

Results are reduced to lowest terms. A mixed number's minus sign applies to the entire number, not only its whole-number part.

Decimal value0.833333

Reduces the result to lowest terms, placing any minus sign in the numerator.

Method and scope

Addition and subtraction use common denominators; multiplication multiplies numerators and denominators, and division uses the reciprocal. Results are reduced by the greatest common divisor; decimal mode reduces the entered decimal string exactly.

The improper-fraction mode also displays a mixed number and an approximate decimal. A mixed-number sign applies to the whole number, not just its integer part.

Denominators cannot be zero, and division cannot use a second fraction with zero numerator. Finite decimal input allows up to 12 decimal places, not repeating decimals or scientific notation; mixed-number numerators must be smaller than denominators.

What this helps you do

Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions, or convert finite decimals and mixed numbers. Choose a mode before entering its values.

What to enter

Start with first numerator, then fill the other relevant fields in the units shown. Available calculations are Arithmetic on two fractions, Finite decimal to reduced fraction, Mixed number to improper fraction, First fraction to mixed number and decimal.

How the calculation works

Addition and subtraction use common denominators; multiplication multiplies numerators and denominators, and division uses the reciprocal. Results are reduced by the greatest common divisor; decimal mode reduces the entered decimal string exactly.

Worked example

One half plus one third equals five sixths. In decimal mode, 0.125 becomes 1/8; a negative mixed number with whole part 2 and fraction 1/3 becomes -7/3.

Understanding the answer

The improper-fraction mode also displays a mixed number and an approximate decimal. A mixed-number sign applies to the whole number, not just its integer part.

Scope and limitations

Denominators cannot be zero, and division cannot use a second fraction with zero numerator. Finite decimal input allows up to 12 decimal places, not repeating decimals or scientific notation; mixed-number numerators must be smaller than denominators.
