Air conditioner cooling capacity by room area

Estimate a preliminary cooling capacity range from floor area, west-facing sun and top-floor exposure in Taiwan.

Start with your own numbers

Editable example

An example is filled in. Replace it with your own data to calculate.

Enter the actual indoor area in ping, then select sun and top-floor conditions. One ping is about 3.306 m².

Enter the cooled indoor floor area in ping. One ping is approximately 3.306 m².
Select yes when direct western afternoon sun enters or heats the room.
Select yes if the room is directly under the building roof.

Example result

Approximate lower cooling capacity

3.72kW

This is a preliminary range, not a guaranteed unit specification. Compare rated cooling capacity, not electricity input power.

Approximate upper cooling capacity4.65 kW
Lower bound3,200 kcal/h
Upper bound4,000 kcal/h

Worked steps

  1. 3200 ÷ 860 = 3.72093 kW
  2. 4000 ÷ 860 = 4.65116 kW

The campus energy handbook gives an approximate range per ping: 400–500 kcal/h for neither exposure, 550–650 for either, 700–800 for both. Divide by 860 for approximate kW. This is a preliminary range from an older campus source, not a residential engineering standard or guarantee. Ceiling height, glazing, shade, insulation, open layouts, people and equipment are not individually accounted for. Ask an air-conditioning professional to assess the site; compare rated cooling capacity, not electrical input power.

Method and scope

This is a preliminary range based on an older Taiwan campus energy handbook, not a residential engineering design or guarantee.

Ceiling height, windows, shading, insulation, open layouts, occupants and equipment are not individually modeled. Ask an air-conditioning professional to assess the site; compare rated cooling capacity, not electrical input power.

Purpose

Estimate a preliminary range for Taiwan, not a final equipment specification.

What to enter

Use actual indoor floor area in ping, and select whether the room has western sun exposure and is on the top floor.

How it works

The referenced campus table uses 400–500 kcal/h per ping for neither, 550–650 for either, and 700–800 for both; divide by 860 to approximate kW.

Example

For 8 ping with neither exposure, the range is 3,200–4,000 kcal/h, approximately 3.72–4.65 kW.

Reading the result

Both limits are approximate cooling capacity, not electrical power consumption or a guarantee the unit is suitable.

Limits

The method omits details including ceiling height, windows, insulation, occupancy and equipment. Have the actual site assessed before choosing a unit.
