What this tool does

Convert between Arabic integers and a common subtractive Roman notation using one input.

What to enter

Enter an integer from 1 to 3999 or a Roman numeral using I, V, X, L, C, D and M. Lowercase works too.

Worked example

For example, enter 2026 to get MMXXVI, or enter MMXXVI to return the number 2026.

How it is calculated

For example, 1994 = 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = MCMXCIV. For Roman input the tool checks that the symbols match this convention.

Understanding the result

The answer is the equivalent notation in the other system; the breakdown shows its place values.

Limitations

This tool does not handle zero, decimals, negatives, overlines, mixed input, or alternative clock-face and historical forms such as IIII.
